Privacy Statement
Effective November 2, 2026
This statement covers the Prosedown desktop app and the website at prosedown.com (including the legacy address getmarkdownmaster.com). “We” and “us” means Frank Buchner, the independent developer who builds and sells Prosedown. Questions go to support@prosedown.com.
1. The Prosedown app
Your documents stay on your computer. Prosedown opens, edits, and saves files on your own disk. Exporting to PDF or Word also happens entirely on your machine. Nothing is uploaded, synced, or scanned. From version 1.6.6, Prosedown also watches the files you have open so it can tell you when another program changes one. It does that through Windows' own file-change notifications, on your computer; nothing about your files or the programs that change them is sent anywhere.
Spelling and links. Spelling suggestions come from the spell checker built into Windows, through the WebView2 component Prosedown runs on, and are worked out on your computer. Words you add to the dictionary stay in your Windows user profile. When you click a web link in Styled Mode, Prosedown hands the address to your default browser (or your mail program for a mailto link), which opens it under its own privacy rules. The app itself fetches nothing.
No telemetry. The app contains no analytics, usage tracking, crash reporting, or advertising code, and it doesn't require an account.
Stored locally. To make the app convenient, it keeps a few things in your user profile on your own computer: a list of recently opened files (their names and folder paths), your light/dark theme choice, when your free trial started and your unlock code once you enter one, and your update settings (whether to check for updates, and any version you chose to skip). On Windows these live in %APPDATA%\Prosedown and the app's local browser storage. You can clear the recent-files list from inside the app, and deleting that folder removes everything. We can't see any of it.
Unlock-code check. When you enter an unlock code, the app sends that code, and nothing else, to prosedown.com so we can confirm it's genuine. We don't store the codes that are checked, and the check isn't linked to your name, email, or documents. We count each check, and whether the code was genuine, in SiloCDP (see section 2), with the app's user agent and your country (see below). The count doesn't include the code.
Update check. From version 1.4, Prosedown asks prosedown.com when it starts, and once a day while it runs, whether a newer version is out, so it can offer the update and show what changed. The request carries only the app's version number (for example “1.4.0”), with no identifier and nothing about you or your documents. We record that version number in our server logs, and in SiloCDP together with the app's user agent (which is just its name and version, such as “Prosedown/1.4.0”) and your country, worked out by our hosting provider from your IP address. Our server also passes your IP address to SiloCDP, which uses it only to look up the network it belongs to (your internet provider, or a hosting company for automated traffic) so it can tell crawlers from people. SiloCDP keeps that network number, not your IP address. Nothing more precise than the country is kept about where you are. We use this to count how many people still run each version, and in which countries, so we know how long older versions need supporting. Turn the check off with “Check for updates automatically” in the app's Updates window. When you click Update now, the app downloads the installer from prosedown.com, with the same user agent and nothing else, and checks it against the fingerprint (SHA-256) published there before running it. From version 1.6.5 every Windows copy of Prosedown installs updates this way.
Those, and the update download you ask for, are the only network requests the app makes. As with any web request, your IP address is visible to our hosting provider while each is handled (see section 4).
2. Visiting prosedown.com
Your choice comes first. When you first visit, a cookie banner provided by SiloCDP, our consent and customer-data platform, asks which categories you allow. Nothing in the Analytics or Marketing categories runs until you say yes, and it stays off if you decline or if your browser sends a Global Privacy Control signal. You can change your mind at any time with the cookie settings link in the site footer.
To remember your answer, SiloCDP stores your choice in a cookie named silo_consent for up to 12 months, and sends SiloCDP a record of which categories you chose (not who you are) so we can show that consent was given. Loading the banner means your browser contacts SiloCDP's servers on every visit.
If you allow Analytics, we use Google Analytics 4 to understand how many people visit, which pages they read, and how many download the app. Google Analytics sets cookies (named _ga and _ga_*) and collects information such as the pages you view, the site that referred you, your browser and device type, and your approximate location (city or country, derived from your IP address; Google Analytics 4 does not store full IP addresses). When you click a download button, we record which operating system and file you chose. Google processes this data under its own privacy policy.
If you allow Marketing, SiloCDP's website script records the pages you visit, the site and campaign that referred you, your browser and device type, and how long you stay. It links these to a random visitor ID kept in your browser's local storage. It may also offer browser push notifications about Prosedown news and updates. You'll only get them if you also click Allow in your browser's own permission prompt, and you can turn them off at any time in your browser's site settings. If you allow them, your browser gives SiloCDP a push subscription address so it can deliver them.
Downloads. Whatever you choose in the banner, when you click a download button our server counts the download in SiloCDP: the operating system, file, and version, your browser's user agent, and your approximate location (country, region, city and postal code, worked out by our hosting provider from your IP address), with no cookie or identifier. Your IP address is passed to SiloCDP only to look up its network, as with the app's update check above; SiloCDP keeps the network number, not the address. If you allowed Marketing, the download is also linked to your SiloCDP visitor ID.
Checkout. When you click a buy button, our server counts the start of the checkout in SiloCDP the same way: the product and price, your browser's user agent, and your approximate location, with no cookie or identifier, and linked to your SiloCDP visitor ID only if you allowed Marketing.
Feedback. Whatever you choose in the banner, the site loads SiloCDP's forms script, which fetches our feedback form from SiloCDP on every visit so the Tried the app? tab can show it. It tracks nothing and sets no cookie. If you send feedback, SiloCDP receives your rating, your comments, your email address if you give one, and the page you sent it from (its address, title, and the site that referred you). If you allowed Marketing, it's also linked to your SiloCDP visitor ID. Your browser's local storage then remembers that you sent it. We use feedback only to improve Prosedown and, if you gave your email, to reply.
The site's fonts and images are served from our own domain. Apart from SiloCDP's consent banner and feedback form, your browser contacts no third parties while you browse unless you allow them.
3. Buying Prosedown
Purchases are processed by Stripe on Stripe's secure checkout page. Stripe collects your payment details, email address, and billing information to process the payment and prevent fraud. We never see or store your full card number. Stripe handles this data under its privacy policy.
From Stripe we receive a record of the purchase: your email address, the amount, and the payment status. We use it to show you your unlock code, to email you a copy of it, to help you recover a lost code, and to handle refunds and support requests. That email is sent through Postmark, our email delivery service, which receives your email address and the message. We keep a record of each purchase (email address and unlock code) in our server logs for those purposes. We also record each purchase (your email address, the amount, and the product, but not the unlock code) in SiloCDP, which keeps a customer record for your email address so we can follow sales and help with support. If you allowed Marketing, the purchase is linked to your SiloCDP visitor ID, so that record also shows the pages you visited before buying. If you answer “How did you hear about Prosedown?” on the page that shows your code, your answer is added to that customer record, with your country and network (looked up from your IP address, which isn't kept). We don't add you to a mailing list and we don't send marketing email.
4. Hosting and server logs
prosedown.com is hosted on Amazon Web Services (AWS). Like nearly every web host, AWS records basic technical information about each request (IP address, browser user agent, the page requested, and the time) to keep the service running and secure. These logs are kept for a limited period and aren't used to track you.
5. Emailing us
If you write to support@prosedown.com, we'll have your email address and whatever you choose to send. We use it only to reply and to help you, and we keep the conversation only as long as it's useful for support.
6. What we never do
- We never sell, rent, or trade your personal information.
- We never access, upload, or read the documents you edit.
- We never share data for advertising or cross-site tracking.
We share information only with the service providers named above (SiloCDP, Google, Stripe, Postmark, and AWS) so they can do their jobs, or when the law requires it.
7. Why we process data
If you're in the EU, UK, or a similar jurisdiction: we process purchase data to fulfill our contract with you and to meet tax and accounting obligations; analytics, marketing, and push notifications are based on your consent, which you can withdraw at any time through cookie settings; server logs and the record of your consent choice are based on our legitimate interest in running and securing the site and meeting our legal obligations; the purchase record in SiloCDP and the anonymous counts of downloads, unlock-code checks, and update checks are based on our legitimate interest in understanding sales and which versions of Prosedown are in use; and support email and feedback you send are processed to answer your request and improve Prosedown.
8. Your rights
Depending on where you live (for example under the GDPR or California's CCPA/CPRA), you may have the right to access the personal information we hold about you, correct it, delete it, object to or restrict how it's used, or receive a copy of it. Email support@prosedown.com and we'll respond within 30 days. You can also complain to your local data-protection authority. Some purchase records must be kept for tax purposes even if you ask us to delete them.
Because SiloCDP, Stripe, Postmark, Google, and AWS may process data in the United States and other countries, your information may be transferred outside your country. These providers use recognized safeguards, such as standard contractual clauses, for those transfers.
9. Children
Prosedown isn't directed at children under 13 (or 16 in the EU), and we don't knowingly collect their personal information. If you believe a child has given us information, contact us and we'll delete it.
10. Changes to this statement
If what we collect changes, we'll update this page and its effective date. If the app ever starts sending anything beyond the unlock-code and update checks, we'll say so here and in the release notes before it ships.
