Where Prosedown is the better fit
- You need to hand people Word files. Export to
.docxwith real headings, lists, tables and images, in one click. There's nothing else to install. - You write math for people who use Word. Type LaTeX, or build a formula from the equation editor's symbol buttons. Word export turns each one into a real Word equation that stays editable.
- You want something small. A 10 MB signed installer that starts instantly and idles around 50 MB of RAM.
- You like seeing the source. Flip between the styled view and raw Markdown whenever you want. Edits in either view stay in sync.
- Your files are edited elsewhere too. Prosedown saves the Markdown as you wrote it, front matter and list style included, and asks before reloading a file that a sync service, a script or another editor changed.
- Price matters. $9.99 once, updates included. No subscription.
Where Typora is the better fit
- You're on a Mac or Linux. Prosedown is Windows-only for now.
- You want to customize the look. Typora has a theme gallery and custom CSS. Prosedown has a light and a dark theme.
- You export to many formats. With Pandoc installed, Typora also exports to EPUB, LaTeX, OpenOffice and more.
Switching is just opening your files
There's nothing to import. Typora and Prosedown both work on ordinary Markdown files, so open your existing .md files in Prosedown and keep writing. If you go back, they open in Typora just the same.
