Markdown guide · Links & images

Images

![Description](picture.png) shows an image.

An image looks like a link with ! in front. The text in square brackets is the alt text: a short description for people who can't see the picture, also shown if the file is missing.

You type
![Sunset over the hills](sample-image.svg "Evening walk")
You get

Sunset over the hills

  • Relative paths are read from the document's folder: ![Chart](images/chart.png) looks in an images folder next to your .md file.
  • Web addresses work too: ![Logo](https://example.com/logo.png).
  • Write alt text that describes what matters in the picture, not "image of…".

To make an image clickable, put the image inside a link:

You type
[![Sunset over the hills](sample-image.svg)](https://prosedown.com)
You get

Sunset over the hills

Tip Word and web page exports include images from your computer inside the exported file, so you can send it on its own.
