Markdown guide · Using Prosedown

Syntax from other apps

Extras some apps support that Prosedown shows as plain text.

Markdown has many dialects. These extras come from other apps. Prosedown keeps them in your file as plain text, but doesn't draw them:

  • Footnotes: Text[^1] with [^1]: The note.
  • Highlight: ==marked text== (use <mark>marked text</mark> instead)
  • Subscript and superscript: H~2~O, x^2^ (use H2O and x2 instead)
  • Emoji codes: :smile: (type or paste the emoji itself instead 😄)
  • Custom heading IDs: ### Heading {#my-id}
  • Definition lists: a term, then : definition on the next line
  • Callouts: > [!NOTE]

Markdown can also contain HTML. Common text tags show as formatting in Styled Mode and are saved exactly as written:

You type
Press <kbd>Ctrl</kbd>+<kbd>S</kbd>. H2O, x2, <mark>marked</mark>, <u>underlined</u>.
You get

Press Ctrl+S. H2O, x2, marked, underlined.

Good to know Other HTML, such as <div> or <details> blocks, is kept exactly but shown as source in Styled Mode. It's drawn when you print or export. If Styled Mode edits would change how something looks, Prosedown asks before saving.
Write Markdown without memorizing it.

Prosedown shows your document styled as you type, with the Markdown one click away. This guide is built in: press F1.
