Paragraphs and line breaks

Leave a blank line between paragraphs.

A paragraph is one or more lines of text. Separate paragraphs with a blank line. Without the blank line, many apps join the lines into one paragraph.

You type
The first paragraph.

The second paragraph, after a blank line.
You get

The first paragraph.

The second paragraph, after a blank line.

In Prosedown's Styled Mode, each line you type stays on its own line. Other apps, including GitHub, run lines together unless there's a blank line between them. Blank lines are the safe choice when your file will be read elsewhere.

To start a new line inside a paragraph in a way every app understands, end the line with a \ (backslash). Two spaces at the end of the line do the same, but they're invisible, so they're easy to lose.

You type
Roses are red,\
violets are blue.
You get

Roses are red,
violets are blue.

Tip Don't indent paragraphs with spaces or tabs. Four spaces at the start of a line turn it into a code block.
